Join internationally renowned master silversmith Michael Lloyd at Goldsmiths’ Hall as he presents his biographical essay The Chalice Maker’s Tale: a beautifully illustrated and philosophical reflection on his life, his process, and a love of the natural world which underpins his work. Michael tells a story that takes us from the collaborative relationship with a patron, through to the deeply reflective practice of hand-drawn design and the ‘conversational’ shaping of metal to produce a chalice; an emotionally charged and meaningful vessel that goes beyond practical function.
About Michael Lloyd
Born in Salisbury in 1950, Michael Lloyd’s silversmithing career spans over five decades. He studied at the Vittoria Street College of Metalwork and Jewellery in Birmingham and then at the Royal College of Art, under Professors Robert Goodden and Gerald Benney. His work in precious metal, using the traditional skills of hand-raising and hand-chasing is in his own words ‘a celebration of our creativity and of our environment; it is a homage to nature.’ Since the late 1980s, he has lived and worked in South West Scotland. His pieces are held in many private collections and museums across the United Kingdom, including the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Royal Scottish Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Several of his works are also in the Goldsmiths’ Company Collection of modern silver.
