INTERWOVEN: Jewellery Meets Textiles is a Goldsmiths’ Centre exhibition for Goldsmiths’ Fair that explores the relationship between contemporary jewellery and textiles, through the work of over thirty jewellers, made in the last forty years.
The interconnection of jewellery and textiles has a long history. Both crafts have an intimate relationship to the body and personal expression. But what is the nature of the bond today? Looking from the perspective of the jeweller, the exhibition asks – how and why are makers looking to textiles as they design?
In the exhibition you will find jewellers who have a material relationship to textiles, those who use textile techniques, some whose works visually resemble a textile and others who find their inspiration in textiles. None of these relationships are mutually exclusive – some makers have a multilayered connection to textiles.
The jewellery is displayed with textile works on loan from the Crafts Council Collection. These have been chosen to create a visual dialogue and explore the links between these two craft disciplines.
INTERWOVEN: Jewellery Meets Textiles is curated by Charlotte Dew, Head of Public Programmes, the Goldsmiths’ Centre, and Greg Parsons, Associate Curator, supported by Erin Sleeper, Programme Coordinator, the Goldsmiths’ Centre.
