Kerry Gregory
With more than 1,600 active members of The Goldsmiths’ Company, we asked them to introduce themselves through a collection of short interviews, showing the wider world what being a freeman or liveryman of the Company is all about. Today we're talking to Freeman Kerry Gregory.
1. Tell us about you and your career
I started in the Jewellery industry by accident when I was 20. I was very fortunate that my first employer was proactive about training, and started me on my Foundation in Gemmology within a month of me joining. I quickly became hooked with gemstones, and specifically gemmology, I always liked science in school and I adore the scientific, and practical aspect of gemmology. Initially working in retail, I carried on studying anything I could about gemstones and diamonds. Getting my Diploma in Gemmology and Diamonds first from Gem-A, then studying diamond grading in Antwerp, moving on to Valuation, as well as other gemmology qualifications. I started teaching gemmology around 20 years ago outside of my full time jobs, and moved around in my career doing valuations, running a small trade workshop, insurance replacement, pawnbroking, as well as trading in gems, diamonds and pre-owned jewellery. I started my own business in 2017, because I wanted to focus on education, specifically the style of education I love; vocational, practical education that allows people to develop and excel in their job. Now, I am close to living the dream that I had 7 years ago, or travelling the world teaching gemmology, I am fortunate that I get to teach so many people throughout the UK, including the apprentices at the Goldsmiths Centre, as well at many conferences and events in the US. I am known for my down-to earth, problem solving approach to education, and people like that our classes are fun as well as useful.
2. How did you first come to hear about the Goldsmiths’ Company?
I honestly can’t remember the first time I heard about the Company, I feel like I have always been aware of it, certainly in the context of hallmarking, since the beginning of my career. I have always been really intrigued by Hallmarking and learnt as much as I could about it, from the very beginning. I know it was early on, so probably well over 20 years ago when I first learnt about “being a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths” and knowing many of the Freeman and Liverymen, and thinking it was something I would love to be a part of, but I wasn’t sure I would be able to.
3. When did you become a member of the Company?
July 3rd 2024
4. What are you involved in at the Company?
So far I have been getting to know what it’s like being in the Company and meeting as many members as I can. I was part of the Great XII quiz team back in November, and have been to some member events, but I am looking forward to being more involved in the future once I have found my feet.
5. How would you describe the Company in three words?
• Historic
• Respected
• Protective
