Kevin Grey’s 'Animus' was the highlight of the Bonhams Decorative Arts & Furniture sale
A pioneering silver work, Kevin Grey’s Animus, was the highlight of the Bonhams Decorative Arts & Furniture sale earlier this week. The piece achieved a record-breaking figure of £72,500 for a contemporary silversmith at auction. The hand-welded silver sculpture was specially commissioned for the recent Victoria and Albert Museum exhibition Silver Speaks: ‘From Idea to Object’ and it has become an instant classic.
Bonhams Head of Silver, Ellis Finch said: “This was a marvellous result for contemporary British silversmiths that shows the medium, which has a longstanding history of pioneering design and creativity, is very much alive. We were honoured that Contemporary British Silversmiths – that mounted the exhibition at the V & A - chose Bonhams to offer pieces at auction.”
Kevin Grey also features in the Goldsmiths' Company Modern Silver Collection. The Collection recently acquired Grey's exquisite Ludus Bowl. The hand raised inner bowl and the structured outer layer are TIG welded together to form one solid piece.
