Young Designer Competition
Jacobs the Jewellers, the Bishopsland Educational Trust, together with sponsors the Goldsmiths’ Company and HS Walsh, announced the Young Designer exhibition competition winners on Monday 27 June.
The exhibition was held at Jacobs the Jewellers in Reading from 6 - 25 June. Four young Bishopsland designers - Karen Westland, Jade Hope, Elizabeth Hendrick and Susan MacLeod - showcased a work of silver and an item of jewellery. The public voted for their favourite piece in each category. Additionally, a number of Bishopsland alumni - Loucinda Nims, Manasi Depala, Lily Henderson, Bryony Knox - now designers in their own right, exhibited their work, though not in competition.
Susan MacLeod was named winner of best jewellery design for Wild Sweetpea Necklace. Elizabeth Hendrick was named winner of best silver design for Tea Light Holder. Prizewinners received a framed presentation certificate and £500 worth of vouchers to spend on tools or materials to help establish their careers in the jewellery and silver industry.
Over the three week period, the event captured the imagination of Jacobs the Jewellers customers as well as first time visitors to the store. The exhibition, running for its second year, was a unique opportunity to view innovative jewellery and silver by talented young designers.
Sir David Reddaway, Clerk of the Goldsmiths’ Company, commented: “The Goldsmiths’ Company is very pleased to be back in Reading supporting this year’s competition organised by Jacobs the Jewellers and Bishopsland. It is a great initiative in support of young British talent, and we congratulate everyone involved in making it such a success.”
