Celebrating Eighty: Art in the Hand
23 March, 2017 - 20 April, 2017
An exhibition at the Goldsmiths' Centre uniting 80 contemporary art medals by students taking part in the British Art Medal Society’s 24th Student Medal Project.
Venue: The Goldsmiths' Centre
This exhibition at the Goldsmiths' Centre unites 80 contemporary art medals by students taking part in the British Art Medal Society’s 24th Student Medal Project. Each year over 100 students from art colleges across the UK submit their finished works to be judged and selected for display.
Celebrating the amazing achievements of young people, it also marks the 80th Birthday of renowned Iranian sculptor and artist Parviz Tanavoli. Eight of his former students will be showing a selection of their medals and jewellery.
Art medals are a fresh challenging medium for artists, sculptures and medallists. They are not to be found on the chests of heroes or in athletes’ lockers, but are a contemporary expression of a much older tradition of medals as hand-sized works of art.
On 30 March, Writer and art historian Marcy Leavitt Bourne will be joined in conversation by Philip Atwood, Keeper of the Museum’s Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum to explore how medals are used as a small but powerful art medium. The talk will be followed by a Q&A. Details of the event can be found on the Goldsmiths' Centre website.
The Iranian Heritage Foundation and The Goldsmiths’ Company have given sponsorship to the exhibition.
'Art in the Hand' takes place at the Goldsmiths' Centre, 23 March - 20 April, Mon – Fri, 9am – 6pm. For full details visit the Goldsmiths' Centre website.
