The Margaret Carey Foundation

The Goldsmiths’ Company Charity is proud to support the Margaret Carey Foundation with a grant towards their core costs.

The Margaret Carey Foundation (MCF) works both within the criminal justice system and the community to give people the chance to help others and learn new skills that will contribute to their rehabilitation.  The charity meets their charitable aims by setting up and supporting bicycle and wheelchair maintenance workshops in prisons and the community where trainees learn to refurbish bikes and wheelchairs to a high standard.

Trainees work to make life easier and better for disadvantaged people as the refurbished wheelchairs and bikes are donated to individuals and communities in need, both in the UK and in developing countries. As well as helping others, trainees become more employable by developing a positive work ethic and gaining useful skills.

Trainees who are better prepared for employment after their release are statistically less likely to reoffend which makes good economic and social sense. Previous trainees have gained employment in companies like Halfords or set up their own bike projects to help others, for many this is their first ever job.

The charity also benefits the environment – in the last decade, the programme rescued over 10,000 bikes and 1,100 wheelchairs that would otherwise have gone to landfill.
