Applications for Workshop space at Goldsmiths' Centre

THE GOLDSMITHS’ CENTRE, the Goldsmiths’ Company’s exciting new state-of-the art building in the heart of London’s Clerkenwell, is due to physically open its doors in October 2011.
Peter Taylor, Director Designate of the Goldsmiths’ Centre, said: “We have reached a very exciting stage as we approach completion of the Goldsmiths’ Centre and prepare to open for business. The Centre is the culmination of a 700 year tradition of support by the Goldsmiths’ Company for members of the jewellery, silversmithing and allied trades. The Centre will not only be a centre of excellence, bringing together like-minded people, but it will also be a catalyst for creativity. The venue itself is stunning and alongside the workshops and studios, there will also be conference, seminar and exhibition space. Together with a café and a regular programme of related specialist exhibitions and events, we hope the local community and general public will also benefit from and enjoy this re-energised building which will live and breathe creativity and craftsmanship.”
The Goldsmiths’ Centre is a charitable enterprise initiated by the Goldsmiths’ Company, an institution with a unique and authoritative standing within the industry. The Centre has a clearly defined aim: to advance, maintain and develop art, craft, design and artisan skills, in particular for goldsmiths. One of the main avenues for achieving this aim is by providing managed workspace and “a spiritual home” for those engaged or interested in these skills. The workshops have been designed to offer the best possible environment and facilities, and in addition will offer a genuine sense of community which will help to enhance professionalism and as well as providing networking opportunities.
Eligibility to apply for one of the workshops in the Centre is fundamentally dependent on the applicant being in business and working within the fields of design or manufacture of precious metals (goldsmithing), the allied trades or those complementary to it.
In order for the Centre to work successfully it is important that the workshops represent a balance of skill sets to help create a supportive and collaborative community. For this reason applicants will also be selected on suitability with no particular emphasis on one to the exclusion of others. In addition all applicants will have to agree to support this principle and be prepared to be pro-active, as well contributing in-kind to the overall objects of the Goldsmiths’ Centre’s charitable workshop provision. Examples of in-kind contribution include teaching on the pre-apprentice course, providing placement for an apprentice, delivering an annual master-class, opening the workshop for tours or simply contributing articles. Potential applicants will also have to demonstrate financial security and all workshops will be subject to a 5 year lease, whilst the starter studios will be on inclusive monthly license.
