About this designer / maker

I have always been intrigued by, and enjoyed solving, specific design problems using innovative and experimental techniques. I use many idiosyncratic methods to achieve my design concepts, I am interested in pattern and in using layers of detail to give depth to my pieces. My jewellery is often inspired by paintings or the intricate detail of architecture, as in the buildings of the Yemen. I also find inspiration in rich theatrical materials and costumes. In these pieces I introduce colour by using transparent enamels, often fired over roller printed patterns, fine wires and combinations of different coloured golds. I use platinum, a variety of coloured golds, pure silver, hardenable silver, Precious Metal Clay, enamel and unusual gemstones. Hardenable silver is an alloy of pure silver and 1% magnesium. Once heat treated it becomes irreversibly hardened and is ideal for the three dimensional enamelling I do. I have recently used the Precious Metal Clay in a brooch which was a response to a textile artist with whom I collaborated with for the Fusion Exhibition, the clay allowed me to give the feel of ruched material as a background to my brooch. Every one of my pieces is individually designed.
