About this designer / maker

Biography

Taking the path of least resistance has never been an option for international award-winning jewellery designer Barbara Tipple. Her designs and choice of materials, although stunning, are often tortuously difficult to work with. The individuality of the designs reflects her artistic background. Inspired by travel and nature, Barbara uses unusual combinations of precious materials to create her unique pieces. Barbara has won the De Beers Diamonds International Award three times - an achievement which gained her membership of the prestigious Diamonds International Academy. In 2004, she won the Diamond Trading Company Diamonds: Nature’s Miracle Award. Her award winning pieces demonstrate her bold yet intricate designs. For example, a platinum and clear acrylic diamond encrusted collar with light diodes. With galleries and workshops on the South Coast and in Mayfair, Barbara offers an extensive core collection of designs, as well as one-off pieces. She also offers a personal design service, and works with her clients from initial design concept, through detailed design sketches, through to the final precise finishing touches. “…her use of oxidised silver, gold and moonstones creates an evocative, naturalistic effect which gives the jewellery a special presence.” David Beasley, Goldsmith’s Review.

Specialist Techniques

“Barbara loves combining metals such as steel with 22 carat gold and then adding the finest engraving or inlaid work. Most of her pieces are strong and bold and one or two are almost monumental, with an almost primitive feeling which is counterpointed by the extremely high quality of the finishes and workmanship.” Lucia van der Post, Financial Times.
