Overview

The Goldsmiths' Company has continuously supported charitable work in education since the sixteenth century. The current Education Committee was formed in 1944 to ensure the continuance of the Company's traditional role as an innovator and supporter of less recognised, but important needs.

The Education Committee works within the following policy guidelines:
  • To foster aspects of education considered to be in most need of encouragement

  • To fill gaps in educational provision

  • To help in situations where the Company's limited finances can have most impact through the multiplier effect

The Company currently funds four major proactive projects:

  • Science for Society Courses. Providing science teachers with free residential courses, aimed at broadening their perspective on subjects allied to the A-level syllabus.

  • Goldsmiths’ Grant for Teachers. Providing primary and secondary school teachers with the opportunity to take time out from the classroom for personal and professional development.

  • Primary School Projects. Assisting selected deprived primary schools to raise their standards of literacy and numeracy.

  • Post-Graduate Medical Students. Providing busaries to promising but needy students who have switched to medicine after their first degree.

Assistance with technical education and training for students of the goldsmith's craft is detailed in Support for the Craft: Trade Training and Development.

As well as administering a number of other minor funding projects, the Education Committee also responds to external applications for grants, using as its yardstick the Company's Grant Guidelines.

All enquiries should be addressed to the Assistant Clerk.
