Overview

The Company has a unique private collection of antique silver, contemporary silver, jewellery and art medals dating from the 15th century to the 21st century. The Collections, which nearly all bear the London hallmark, number some 8,000 items. These items are used either for their original purpose, or to display in exhibitions, or to inspire contemporary patronage of living craftsmen.

Display of Collections

A selection of antique and modern pieces is displayed during part of the year within the Hall and can be viewed on Open Days.

There is a regular programme of loans from the Collection to major exhibitions in this country and abroad.

DUBLIN EXHIBITION OF THE FINEST MODERN SILVER

October sees the launch in Ireland of the Goldsmiths’ touring exhibition ‘Treasures of Today’, featuring the work of over fifty leading contemporary silversmiths, with some 120 pieces of modern silver dating from 1980. The exhibition opens at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, Dublin on 1st October 2008 and runs until 18th January 2009.

The curator, Rosemary Ransome Wallis, says: “This is the first major showing in Ireland of the Goldsmiths’ Company’s contemporary silver collection. The National Museum of Ireland is particularly pleased that the exhibition traces the evolution of design styles as well as displaying modern silver as a living decorative art. Each represented silversmith has an individual signature which has made their work well known and highly collectable. Two retail galleries in Dublin, Design Yard and Eblana, will be selling pieces by these silversmiths throughout the period of the exhibition.
This unique collaboration between the National Museum of Ireland and the Goldsmiths’ Company will ensure a truly remarkable exhibition.”
