Hallmarking Services
Provided by Assay Office London
Traditional, Struck Marks
The traditional method of marking is using a punch.
In this method, the mark is created by moving (forming) the metal.
The size of the hallmark is thus dictated by the sizes of the punches
used. If no indication is placed on the hallnote, then a normal UK
mark is applied. A
minimum mark can also be requested and is charged at the same
rate.

Laser Hallmarking
During laser hallmarking, a very fine laser beam of high power is
used to melt and vaporise material thus allowing creation of a detailed
mark. Unlike the traditional method, laser hallmarking is akin to
etching where material is removed.
Benefits
Because laser hallmarking is an etching process and metal is not moved,
laser hallmarked articles do not suffer bruising and do not require
any setting back. The process is thus ideal for hallmarking hollow
or thin articles and when minimum finishing is required. Unlike traditional
hallmarks where surface detail can be polished away, 3D laser hallmarks
(see below) retain excellent definition when polished heavily. A laser
also permits marking of logos, signatures and serial numbers etc.
Goods Suitable for Laser Hallmarking
The limited depth of focus on a laser makes flat articles, such as
watch backs, photo frames, tops of cufflinks and flat areas on large
wares, the best suited for laser hallmarking. Marking on curved articles
is possible when the radius of curvature is sufficiently shallow to
maintain focus (a smaller size/length mark often helps for these articles).
Large bangles and bracelets can usually be marked but rings and other
articles, which have a tight radius of curvature, can be difficult
or impossible.
This is the premium quality laser hallmark. It resembles a struck
mark and is available in sizes A (6mm) to G (2mm). Requirements for
smaller marks will be considered.
This resembles the outline of a struck hallmark and is available in
sizes A (6mm) to M (0.5mm).

Mark Formations
The normal mark formation applied by Assay Office London
is a horizontal mark with minimal spacing between
the marks.
Other formations are permissible at extra cost, and
these are described in our list of Services and Charges.
Manufacturers
wanting one of these formations should clearly state the
name of the formation required on the hallnote. See Getting
Something Hallmarked: Submission
of Articles for Hallmarking. Mark formations can be found
in the downloadable Pricelist.
