Types of Marks
Traditional Struck Marks
Made with a punch, creating an impression by moving (forming) the metal.
Handmarking is the most traditional method where the article is struck using a punch. Pressmarking is essentially an automated version of handmarking.
Laser Hallmarking and engraving
At the Goldsmiths’ Company Assay Office, we are expert in using the latest laser marking techniques, not just for hallmarking, but also to enable customers to add their own personalised touch.
We use this laser technology to mark thin, hollow or more delicate items and can apply:
- Hallmarks
- Trade marks
- Logos
- Signatures
- Stock numbers
- Stone weights
- Personal messages
Our very fine, high powered lasers create an extremely detailed mark, even in small sizes (0.5mm) and we can apply the mark to most metallic surfaces. The marks retain excellent definition even after polishing.
Articles suitable for laser hallmarking include:
- Items of jewellery
- Watch backs
- Photo frames
- Tops of cufflinks
- Flat areas on large wares
More information on bespoke marking can be found here.
We offer two different types of laser hallmark:
2D laser mark
Resembles the outline of a struck mark.
3D laser mark
A premium quality hallmark that resembles the outline of a struck mark.
Both marks are available sizes A (6mm) to M (0.5mm).
Size guide
Standard struck hallmarks are available in sizes 0.5mm to 6mm (height).
Laser marks are also available at the same sizes as standard struck hallmarks however due to the difference in application laser marks can be applied to items at a larger size than the recommended struck marks.
Normal Mark
The normal mark formation applied by The Assay Office is a horizontal mark with minimal spacing between the marks.
Feature Marks
Other formations (‘feature marks’) are permissible, at extra cost. Further details and formations can be found here.
